Custom millwork can transform a space from ordinary to extraordinary. But if you've never worked with a millwork fabricator before, the process might seem unclear.
How long does it take? What does it cost? How involved do you need to be?
Whether you're an architect, builder, or homeowner planning a renovation, understanding the process makes everything smoother. Here's exactly what to expect.

What is Custom Millwork?

Custom millwork is any woodwork made specifically for your project. Unlike off-the-shelf products, it's designed, fabricated, and installed to fit your exact specifications.
Common examples include kitchen cabinetry, built-in shelving, wall paneling, crown molding, coffered ceilings, custom doors, reception desks, and fireplace surrounds.
The difference? Custom millwork is built for your space, your style, and your needs. Nothing is standard.

The Custom Millwork Process: 6 Stages

Stage 1: Consultation

We start by understanding your vision through a site visit or virtual meeting. Bring inspiration images, rough dimensions, your budget range, and project timeline.
Pro Tip: The more reference images you share, the better we can understand your vision.

Stage 2: Design & Material Selection

We create detailed 3D renderings, CAD drawings, and provide material samples. You'll see exactly what the finished product will look like before we start building.

During design is when we select materials, as this affects how things are made. You'll choose your wood species (walnut, white oak, maple, cherry), finish type (natural stain, painted, lacquer), and hardware. Materials affect appearance, durability, cost, and lead times.
Why this matters: Good design now prevents problems during fabrication and installation.

Stage 3: Site Verification

Once the design is finalized, we visit the site to confirm all dimensions and verify that everything will work in real-life conditions. This critical step ensures the design translates perfectly from drawings to the actual space.

We measure existing conditions, check for any site constraints, and make final adjustments before fabrication begins. Once the space is fully confirmed and the design is approved, we move into fabrication.
Why this matters: Catching dimension issues now prevents costly mistakes during installation.

Stage 4: Fabrication

Your millwork is built in our shop using CNC machines and traditional craftsmanship. This includes cutting, shaping, assembly, finishing, and quality control at each stage.
Why it takes time: Multiple finish coats need proper drying time, and precision work can't be rushed.

Stage 5: Installation

Before installation begins, your site needs drywall finished, flooring installed, electrical roughed in, and walls level. We confirm dimensions one final time before we arrive.

Our team delivers and installs your millwork on-site. We handle placement, leveling, securing, hardware installation, and final adjustments. There will be some dust and noise, but we clean up thoroughly.
Pro tip: Keep other trades away during installation to prevent damage.

Stage 6: Final Walkthrough

We inspect everything together, adjust hardware, handle touch-ups, and provide care instructions. Check that all doors and drawers operate smoothly and finishes look good in different lighting.
